    Ladakh, in Tibetan, means "country of high passes". Also know as little Tibet or little Shangri-La, Ladakh is one of the Himalayan regions opened later to the tourists.

    Ladakh is located in the far North of India, in the eastern side of the Jammu &Kashmir state. The cultural and ethnic roots of Ladakh are very different from Kashmir world; Ladakh is historically tied to Tibet by the Himalayan Buddhism (Vajarayana Buddhism), by the Ladakhi language, very close to Tibetan, by the Mongolian race of people. The history of Ladakh is often part of the history of Tibet, and the frequent travels of Dalai Lama in Ladakh evidence it.
    The best season to visit Ladakh is summer, from early June to late September, because the temperature is warm and the monsoons, lied on the northern India in this period, are stopped by the Himalaya Range.

    1. Ladakh is hightest settlement in India

    The Suru and Zanskar valleys form a great trough enclosed by the Himalayas and the Zanskar Range. Rangdum is the highest inhabited region in the Suru valley, after which the valley rises to 4,400 m  at Pensi-la, the gateway to Zanskar. The extreme limit of cultivation is at Korzok, on the Tso-moriri lake, at 4,600 m are widely considered to be the highest fields in the world.

    2. It has world's hightest motorable road

    Khardung La in Ladakh is claimed to be the highest motorable road in the world. It is situated at an altitude of 5359 meters.

    3. Ladakh is home to the Mystical Magnetic Hill

    Magnet Hill is a so-called “gravity hill” located near Leh in Ladakh, India. The “Hill” is located on the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar national highway, about 30 km from Leh, at a height of 11,000 feet above sea level. The alignment of the road with the slope of the background can give the illusion that cars are able to drift upwards.

    4. Hightest Desert in the world

    Stretching from the mighty Himalayas to the alluring Indus River, Ladakh or the highest plateau in India, is also the highest desert in the entire world. The fact that the region is fringed by soaring peaks, the region deprives of the monsoon cloud and remains barren throughout the year. Snowfall during the winter is the only source of water in this high-altitude desert.

    5. Twin humped camel

    Camel, better known as ‘ship of desert’, is best suited for this vast barren land. Camel ride is a popular activity, experienced by tourists here for almost every season. Interestingly, the Bactrian camel is a large, even-toed camel exclusively native to Ladakh. These camels have two humps on its back, compared to dromedary camel, which offers an exciting ride.

    6. The Pangong lake in Ladakh is one of the highest salt lakes in the world

    Pangong Tso means "high grassland lake" in Tibetan language , also referred to as Pangong Lake, is an endorheic lake in the Himalayas situated at a height of about 4,350 m. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water.

    7. The highest bridge in the world

    A Bailey bridge is 30 meters long and was built in 1982 by the Indian Army between the Dras and Suru rivers in the Himalayan mountains. Bailey bridge is a temporary bridge of lattice steel designed for quick assembly from prefabricated parts. The design is famous for its military application.


    8. Frozen River Trek

    A hub of the adrenaline seekers, Ladakh hosts one of the most adventurous treks in the world. Known as the ‘Chadar Trek’ or the ‘Frozen River Trek’, this enthralling trek is conducted only during the months of January and February when the entire of the Zanskar River freezes down completely. Also, it is this frozen river that serves as the only mode of communication to the rest of the Ladakh valley during the winters.


    9. Bird paradise

    One should know that Ladakh, the most beautiful place in the world is arid. It doesn’t have adequate rain in a year and remains dry. Still, the place is flocked by more than 200 species of bird. These beautiful birds, adds another dimension to the visitors. Finches, Robins, Redstarts and Hoopoe are the prominent species, found in the region.

    10. Ladakh is the Highest Plateau in the state of Kashmir

    Ladakh is the highest plateau of state of Kashmir with much of it being over 3,000 m. It extends from the Himalayas to the Kunlun Ranges and includes the upper Indus River valley.

    The landscape of Ladakh is glorious but stark and the surrounding mountains are painted in colors that only nature could choose. Only adventure lovers are recommended to visit Ladakh. Ladakh should not be compared with a hill station like Srinagar. The region is predominantly Buddhist and several important Buddhist monasteries dominate the region. Some of them are located within visiting distance from Leh and normally day excursions are ideal to visit most of them. The clean, dry air, magnificent scenery and the warm hospitality of the happy people makes Ladakh truly memorable.
